1992 July 2 Letter: Dr. Mohammed Said for U.S. Senate

FROM DR. SAID:

TO: ELECTED DELEGATES, ELECTED ALTERNATES, THE STATE DEMOCRATIC CENTRAL COMMITTEE MEMBERS, COUNTY CHAIRS, LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT CHAIRS, CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT CHAIRS, DEMOCRATIC MEMBERS OF CONGRESS, DEMOCRATIC STATE ELECTED OFFICIALS AND OTHERS

FELLOW DEMOCRATS, FELLOW AMERICANS:

I am writing to you this letter as the most cost effective way to get my message to the people of our State. Particularly to the Democrats, and nothing is more direct and effective than to send it to the three thousand individuals who are the true activists – the hard core of the Democratic party. All of you, energetic and the driving force who can make a difference. I distributed a personal message which contained the accompanied letter and platform with some changes at the Democratic party State Convention in Silverdale, on June 6, 1992.

I did not know, at the time, whether I was going to run as a Democrat or Independent. Since some of the issues I raised on my platform did not conform fully with the Democratic platform which I helped draft. And thanks be to God, even with some of it’s shortcomings, nothing could compare with the Republican platform which was described by some Republican Officials as going back to the dark ages.

However, after deep thinking and soul searching, I came to the conclusion that the Democratic party is not a monolithic party, nor an exclusive club, but rather a party of inclusion which can well accommodate my ideas. After a brief wandering, I came back home as a progressive Democrat with an exciting agenda.

During the last eight years since I first became involved with the—Democratic party, I had a chance to meet many of you at the platforms and State conventions. I was very impressed with your pioneer ideas, your honesty and integrity. You gave me support at very crucial moments. First in 1988 when you elected me to represent the State on the National Platform Committee. In 1990, you rejected the letter of Congressmen Jim McDermott signed by eighty-three officials of the Democratic party against self determination and Statehood of the Palestinians. When I presented my case to you, you came in support of the individual truthfulness against the corrupt politicians and the interest groups. You passed historical and unprecedented resolutions calling for the Middle East free of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, calling to hold foreign aid to Israel, pending respect of Palestinian human rights and accepting the UN resolutions regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. You passed the Harkin amendment tying foreign aid to human rights, Unfortunately, when the official platform of the State Democratic party for 1990 was printed, those resolutions were not there. They mysteriously disappeared, and until this moment, I have not been able to get a satisfactory answer to what happened.

This year, 1992, another attempt to coerce members of the platform when a letter signed by Larry Kenny, the President counsel of the AFL CIO, calling to delete all resolutions regarding the Middle East Again, this letter was rejected by members of the Platform and by you at the convention when you passed those resolutions most important the status of Jerusalem as an I nternational city for all faiths opposing its annexation and being the capital of Israel. You were in line with the rest of the world. More courageous than your elected officials in Washington D. C.

When I met Larry at the convention, he was candid enough to tell me that he did not read the letter though it was circulated on his behalf with his signature which made me wonder if the AFL is indeed CIA instead of CIO.

As you know, there are two other candidates who are running for the U. S. Senate on the Democratic ticket, Patty Murray and Don Banker.

I never met or spoke with either of them, but I read in the news media attacking each other. I listened to them at the convention rating their speeches as average. I think they are honest and good people, but in my judgment, they will have a hard time beating the Republicans as being too much off the main stream and even if they beat the Republicans and be elected, they will not make much difference. They will be just numbers, one out of one hundred. However, my election will send shock waves throughout the State, the Nation and the World.

I am not a one issue candidate. Some of the points I present to you in my platform are flexible. They are not to be treated as fundamentals. The three issues which I consider to be the bedrock are the ones which I have the experience and the drive to push them through the State, the Nation, and the World. These are jobs, Healthcare, and Peace. Jobs through open trade and communications with more than one billion Moslem in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East The Healthcare through the most comprehensive and cost effective with universal access and one single payer. Finally, the peace as you see in my biography which illustrates my commitment to co-existence and reconciliation. This mission will be continued with my first trip, this year, overseas to meet with the top leaders before the primary.

It will be a great honor to represent our State and the people of the State will benefit directly or indirectly through this economic boom with my public pledge to generate more than one billion dollars a year of business to our State.

I know my name is not familiar to you. It is not your next-door neighbor’s, it is not your Grandma’s apple pie, but the State who elected Dixie Lee Ray as Governor and the ultra conservative Scoop Jackson as Senator can elect Mohammed Said as the first physician, the first Palestinian-American, the first Moslem-American.

It will be a message of hope to the people all over the world, especially the countries in turmoil, that we, in this country, in spite of our different backgrounds, color, race, culture, or religion are adherent to our precious Constitution, our Bill of Rights, particularly the First Amendment, that the only fight we have is at the ballot box.

I NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO BE THE JOBS GENERATOR, THE HEALTH PROVIDER, AND THE PEACE MAKER. THANK YOU!!
