29 May 1972 Letter from Abdullah Hakim
Letter to Dr. Said from Abdullah Hakim
May 29, 1972
All praises are due to Allah, Lord of the Worlds! I am sorry that we took so long in writing you, Brother. We have been tied up with a lot of basic problems of survival. May Allah bless you for your patience!
In one of our recent letters to a Brother in Libya, we wrote something like this: “After speaking to our elders and practicing Islam in our North American communities, we have come to the conclusion that we should strive hard to gain a sound understanding of Arabic and the Laws of Qur’an and Sunnah. In Toronto, presently, is a group of Muslims, of African descent, who have been raised up in the United States, Canada, and the West Indies. We are very anxious to further the propagation of Islam in this hemisphere or anywhere that it is needed! If there are any programs available that could provide knowledge of the Arabic language, Qur’an, Sunnah, Islamic history, or any other skill necessary, we would be prepared to begin in September, 1972 (right now there are about 10 brothers and 5 sisters)
The situation here is getting desperate, for the repression of the disbelievers on our community is getting worse, and Elijah Muhammad has succeeded in enticing many people into his madness. Therefore, in our limited position we are praying to Allah and appealing to our Muslim brothers abroad for this vital help. Insha-Allah, we would be prepared to spend 3-5 years in the path of Allah. May Allah have mercy on our souls for we know not what we do,”
Brother, you may take thoughts from this and also my personal letter which I have sent out to different Islamic schools.
Thank you for your cooperation, and may Allah grant you a place in Paradise with companions pure and holy.
Your Brother in Islam,
